Start: Penzance
End: Penzance
Miles: 0
Total miles: 273
Today was my first full rest day, where I will sleep in the same place for two consecutive nights. It feels strange not to be moving forward, not to be on the path. Last night after I fueled up on a curry in the pub, I felt I had enough energy to keep walking today and didn't need a rest. But I spoke too soon. Today I have felt very tired. The most tired so far on this whole trip. I think it's just a case of my body knowing I'm allowed to rest and not having any mile target or adrenaline pushing me forward. It's understandable after 20 days of carrying my heavy bag over 273 miles, through Somerset, Devon and half of Cornwall. I addressed this tiredness with a two hour nap this afternoon and minimal movement. I feel a lot better for it and after another big dinner, I'm sure I'll be ready for the next miles in the morning.
Over the next 6 days my aim is to move eastwards to complete phase 4. Around the Lizard Penninsula, to the half way marker at Porthallow, across the estuaries around Falmouth to arrive at Mevagissey. This will be where my next bed will be, 87 miles away from here. The route is mixed - some easier town stretches and some rugged remote sections. There are weather warnings for extreme heat on both Sunday and Monday, so I'll have to factor this into my plan to try to avoid being exposed to this for too long.
Overall I'm happy with how my journey is shaping up so far. I've come 273 miles on my feet, met lots of supportive friendly people and discovered many new places. I'm excited to continue with my progress and continue making memories as I walk back home. I can see the Lizard Penninsula stretching out to sea from here and even though the distance looks insignificant on a map, it looks far as it extends out to sea. But there will be no more thoughts of miles, hills, heat, sweat and my heavy pack tonight. That will all return tomorrow. But for now all that matters is dinner and sleep.
Great move, all that resting. That's the bit at which I excel. If there was a resting challenge, with the luxuriant bed and a pub curry, I'd be up for it. Olympic standard! Meanwhile, enjoy the rest and prepare for the heat. On the coast may be a little cooler, but stay safe. Cheers. Nick
Well done Amy. What a trooper. I hope by now you're tucked up in the most luxuriant bed.Preserve that energy for the next phase. Please listen to your body on Sunday and Monday and don't take any undue risks. Stay safe. Gx
Good luck with the next stretch. Going to be tough but you can do it. All that heat will be a good excuse for extra ice cream
To stay or not to stay that is the question Sam! Are you noble enough to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune? Lynn Sxx
Happy that you are managing to luxuriate at least temporarily. Let's hope the intense weather doesn't thwart you in the coming days. Lynn S.XX
